Public Engagement
We welcome proposals for public engagement activities delivered both in person and virtually.
Grants of up to £1,000 are available to members of the Genetics Society to support public engagement activities related to genetics. Funding may be used to cover eligible travel and materials costs. Please note that travel expenses must be budget/economy class and UK-based only.
What the grant cannot be used for:
- Salaries, freelance fees, insurance or institutional overhead costs
- Room hire for events hosted within academic institutions
- Public engagement activities conducted as part of UKRI or charity-funded research projects, where such costs should have been included in the original grant application
- Data collection undertaken for research purposes
- The production of for-profit media, including books, electronic media, or artwork
- Travel and accommodation costs for event attendees
Requirements for successful applicants:
- Acknowledge support from the Genetics Society at their activity or event
- Include the Genetics Society logo in any newly produced promotional materials
- Adhere to the Genetic Societies’ Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles
- Provide participation numbers and a brief report following the activity
The Society also maintains a range of publicity materials, including pop-up banners and leaflets, which you are welcome to use, by arrangement.
The Public Engagement Grant has two deadlines per year (1st March and 1st October).
Applicants are encouraged to submit their application at least three months in advance of the project start date, where possible, and should normally expect to receive a decision on their application within four weeks of the application deadline.
If you have any queries regarding the application process or are experiencing any difficulties with your submission, please contact the team at team@genetics.org.uk.
Please note that the Society takes no responsibility for risk assessments or public liability issues relating to any event or activity. These must be completed in accordance with the host institution’s or event venue’s standard procedures.
EDI Statement:
The Genetics Society is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community regardless of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, caring responsibilities, age, religion or belief.
